A recent milestone birthday brought on an unexpected wave of reflection, introspection and an onslaught of thought bubbles with long, winding trains. Words and ink and blank pages are good for this type of thing. I need to stop reconfiguring and let thoughts be as they are as they are as they are.

The milestone is an interesting concept. What makes it more pronounced than the other years, anyway? Perhaps it's like a emboldened chapter title in a fancy little font so that you remember where you are in relation to the grand scheme of pages before and after.

A pause might be appropriate for relocating parts of moments and conversations, to piece them together to see them more clearly so that they don't go missing before I've learned what I need to learn from them.

Ten years is a long time to remember, friends, let alone a lifetime. So, I'll only try to remember the last ten years for now. I don't want a life of blurred memories if I can help it. So, I'll try to hold on to even the dark ones because they mean something, too. Maybe even more sometimes.

In the last ten years, I have learned...

...how to be okay

...that people have different definitions of the role of "friend," and maybe that's part of the beauty of finding what you'd call a "true" one

...that wearing polka dots has a high probability of elevating your overall countenance

...how to kiss

...that small successes are oftentimes more important than the ones everyone else tells you are most important

...where to go for the best chai tea latte in the whole wide world

...that a beloved childhood long-lost cousin was alive and well all these years, and that he is a kindred spirit for writing the most wonderful letters

...that I'm not stupid

...that going from no bangs to with bangs can change your life, and I should never ever ever-ever-ever go back

...that I can identify myself as an artist, and it can be true

...that making new friends who haven't known me since forever can be liberating because they won't naturally pigeon-hole you the same way

...that I can love far more deeply than I can hate, and it feels like a relief to know

...how much intentional thoughtfulness it takes to create a wedding day that is about community instead of individuals, and how many traditional rules need to be broken for authenticity's sake

...that I overuse the words "true," "quite," "lovely," and "wonder," and probably have too many commas in most of my sentence-strings

...how many of the beliefs I held growing up have been altered to something hopefully more loving, less judgmental, and therefore, more accurate if I really get the whole point of it at all

and,

...that every day is actually worth paying attention to (especially when it's cold out)

book for march

Surprised by Hope | N.T. Wright

Not so very much time for leisurely reading lately.  I have been stagnantly paused in the middle of The Tiger's Wife for over a month now- and not for lack of interest.  Books are dear to me.  So imaginative, so enjoyable, so affecting.  They comprise of end of a days and breakaways.  I miss its escape.

March is not yet over, but I already know that I will not finish any other books in the remaining three days.

Non-fiction has always been a challenge for me- unless it is a history where there is still story.  Stories are and always be what makes my love of reading so deep.  However, I am in a theological book group made up of some very special friends of mine and we meet once a week and discuss difficult questions, try to wrap our minds around heady concepts, and together- we hope for hope.

This book has been read over a series of many months, split in the middle by an intermission to read a part of Eternity in their Hearts by Don Richardson.  There is so much to be said of what I did or did not agree with, what provoked what in me, and where I have more questions,  but that is precisely what book group meetings are for.

1//  This would be a dream come true.  If only it were another year when our wedding and honeymoon weren't taking up all the lovely happy space.  Maybe someday, they'll do it all again.

2//  Film viewing of The Hunger Games tonight with book fans Brittany, Phil, Victorya, and Jon.  Curiosity and wondering just how they are going to translate book to screen.

3//  Arranging a meeting with and old friend, Jeremy Langill, who will be officiating our wedding.

4//  Setting up the wedding photography contract with Michael Finster of Blue Kite Photo, and trying not to be too impatient to see the engagement photos he took earlier this month.

5//  Gearing up for a conversation that I sense is going to be sad because of me.

The overcast skies and brisk morning temperature raised my hopes and I have been carrying around my brand spankin' new happy umbrella all day hoping for a few drops of rain.  I am not a weather-checker, so I am always surprised by rainfall or 100-degree weather.  But, I'll take the overcast wonder even if the rain is remiss.  So lovely, so fresh and envigorating.

Week- into busy weekend- into week- into busy weekend, seems to be the pattern lately.  Last night, Jason and I hauled and hawed and reorganized my garage in the hopes of storing this beautiful king-sized bed between now and July/August when we find our new home.  Probably too soon to be lifting things (given my recent fight with torticollis), but the bed is coming today or Thursday, so no choice!  We made excellent progress and Val was shocked and impressed at our ability to consolidate boxes and separate out her stuff from her daughter, Kirsten's storage, while still leaving (hopefully) ample room for the bed.

Last night, I was quite sore and had a little numb spot between my shoulder blades along my spinal collumn, probably not a good thing, but everything seems back to normal today with only the typical amount of pain and tightness that have been hovering since my trip the spasms desisted.

And things are movin' movin' movin' and I have to look at that as a good thing.

Quality time with Scarlet and coaxing her to eat on her own, which she has been doing for the past two- and this morning- days, making us question whether we really should put her down this afternoon

, watching my latest Netflix film, Waitress, which turned out to be a lot deeper than I thought dealing with sexism, abusive relationships, and inner strength

, making paper flowers, teaching B to make paper flowers, and making more paper flowers

, spending time with B and starting By Way of the Stars, starring three actors from our favorite television program growing up, Road to Avonlea

, Mountainside on Sunday

, whipping up some batches of quinoa pasta

, making a call to a family friend to ask if we might have our SoCal "Just Married" party at their home (no word yet)

, and taking Airborne or EmergenC twice a day, to no avail.

all change is motion

Thirteen days, going strong.  There were a couple days that almost didn't happen, but they did somehow.  The last several days have truly reflected a whirlwind quality and I feel worn and stretched and a little hopeful, but very contemplative and anxious.

This week, I realized:

1. I like cold bananas better than room temperature bananas.  Especially on gluten-free cereal with rice milk.

2. It is nearly impossible to put down Catching Fire even with the threat of an early morning the next day.

3. Our little home will not be the same if Scarlet is gone, and waiting to hear if she needs to be put down feels like rain washing away chalk drawings.

4. I have to try harder and be more present.

5. Sometimes, I need breaks from thinking about all things related to wedding planning.

6. There is no need to be nervous to talk with a long-lost lovely because it will just be like it ever was.

7. The world is falling apart all around, but there is love growing, too.  And I want to make it grow.

8. There is hope in change and all change is motion (remember, Becks?).

onset of twenty-eight

apparently, this is what twenty-eight looks like:

Now that I am twenty-eight years old, it is time to own up to my 27 Things to Do During my 27th Year list.  I nearly made it.  Check it out.  It should be noted that I created the list at the tail end of February last year, so technically, I had 8 months to complete my 27 goals instead of the typical 12.  Considering all this, I am pleased.

Highlights of My 27th Year:

Finding out that my cousin who was last seen during childhood fifteen years ago
was alive and well, and then beginning a lovely letter-writing friendship

Seeing my beautiful cousin, Kristin, marry her love, Curtis

Christmas holidays and time with relatives

Seeing Traces, live, for B's birthday and
making the Brittany's 23rd Birthday Game Show

Celebrating the anniversary of our friendship with Micah Engel
at Green Oak Ranch, where we first met our future life-long friend

Attending the Not For Sale Global Forum for Anti-Human Trafficking with B

and the hardest part:

In Loving Memory of

books for october

Finding old photographs taken by
a previous, unknown girlfriend of my grandfather's
(or maybe by her family)
who no one seems to know much about,
during his time in Nebraska.

There are many more, which I will share here in the future.
The photographs reminded me of things that I read about in books.

1. Tortilla Flat
by John Steinbeck

2. Breaking Dawn
by Stephenie Meyer

3. Water for Elephants
by Sara Gruen

4. This is Where I Leave You
by Jonathan Tropper
